The Hourglass
What is your most treasured possession? Most people would agree that material possessions are, in the end, worthless. What really matters to us, and what we would give almost anything to have more of, is time.
Time is such a mysterious and yet powerful concept. We waste it endlessly, and yet we constantly complain that we do not have enough of it. It passes agonizingly slowly when we want it to hurry, and yet it passes in the blink of an eye when we wish it would slow down. No power on earth exists to grant us more time and we are painfully aware that for each of us, eventually, the sands of time will run out.
The Hourglass card symbolizes our complex relationship with time. This card shows up to remind us to have patience when we want to rush ahead. All good things come to those who wait. Wait until the sands have trickled through the Hourglass before you push onwards. Your patience will be rewarded.
When we are hurt, either physically or emotionally, the Hourglass is also important. This card demonstrates how time heals – literally, in the case of recovery from illness, and metaphorically in the case of emotional and psychological recovery from pain. If you are still in the depths of despair, turn the Hourglass once more and give yourself more time to heal. There is no rush and no deadline. It will take as long as it takes, and that’s OK.
With its potent symbolism, the Hourglass card also shows up when we need to stop wasting time or procrastinating. This card asks, if not now, when? Will you wait until it’s too late? Will you be someone who looks back on your life regretting missed opportunities, or will you be someone who uses every minute of their limited time to the full?
On the face of the Hourglass card we see a large hourglass partially buried in the sand on an ocean shore. As the waves and the tides mark the passage of time, the hourglass waits for us to turn it once more to gain a better understanding of its message.
When you draw the Hourglass card, ask yourself the following questions: are you in too much of a hurry? Do you need to slow down and learn some patience? Have you allowed enough time for your healing? Or are you watching life passing you by while you waste time?
